Introduction

In this current dating pool, has the thought of polyamory crossed your mind? Would you be able to juggle multiple? How would you even feel, if your partner wanted to have an open relationship? That’s the question asked in Covino’s and Marvin’s excellent film!

Main Discussion

On their way to their friend’s beach house, Ashley, played by Arjona, tells her husband Carey, played by Marvin, she wants a divorce. Learning his best friends Paul, played by Covino, and Julie, played by Johnston, have an open marriage, Carey starts having ideas on how he can save his relationship from impending collapse.

Right out the gate, the film starts with a bang with a thrilling opening scene on a highway. The film has a brutality to it with a long fight scene where everything and the kitchen sink is used as mele weapons. The comedic timing of character’s actions plays out well, stopping during conflict to talk only to get back to the action. It never feels out there or cartoonish.

Key Takeaways

I loved every character equally. There are nuances and complexity to each character which are peeled back like an onion to expose the inner flaws of each, such as Adria’s character who goes through a journey of self-discovery. It plays with the archetypes of modern dating such as the nonchalant man, the nice guy, the breadcrumber, and the rescuer and spins those on their head weaving a story about finding connection. The characters are continuously learning about themselves as they talk though their issues.

The concept of polyamory is neither applauded nor lampooned but rather examined to uncover the thoughts of the characters rather than the practicality. The theme of communication reverberates throughout the sharp script without needless pointing it out aloud. The film makes the case that love is an action, not a verb and that there’s no definitive black or white explanation of why someone may be attracted to another. Emotions just are, we can either choose to explore them or succumb to them.
