Introduction

Full transparency, I found out about this film for the first time on the subway during the first week of February. There were several banners on the video screens above the terminal. Several posters on the walls. I’m not sure what the marketing budget was, this is an independent film after all, but it’s a shame this won’t get widespread recognition because this film is unpredictable, bonkers, and a whole lot of fun!

Main Discussion

Tell me if you heard this before? A Man played by Sam Rockwell, walks into a diner and claims he’s from the future. He recruits several patrons to help him on his quest to stop the oncoming A.I. apocalypse. As he and his motley crew trudges onward to save the future, their individual pasts reveal the bizarre and morbid reality they live in. Sound familiar?

The premise of the film may seem simple, even formulaic. Haven’t there been a ton of movies about time travel with the fate of humanity on the brink of collapse? Thankfully, Robinson’s use of absurd and hilarious concepts helps make the plot feel unpredictable. Quick gags carry emotional weight and factor into the overall narrative. The surreal concepts introduced not only provide interesting spectacles but never feels like the film jumps the shark. The film forces you to stop guessing.

Key Takeaways

I found myself heavily invested in the cast. Sam Rockwell’s scrappy savior is full of such energy that his sarcasm is hilarious and fun. There are moments where you question whether he’s deranged or truly the savior of humanity, which is refreshing. It plays against the type of super handsome, buff hero archetype or the child is the key to the future tropes that most sci-fi films have dragged along. There’s a level of dread each member of the group carries that I feel anyone can relate to. Michael Peña and Zazie Beats' characters are hilarious as anxiety induced members of the group. The standouts of the movie are Haley Lu Richardson and Juno Temple. Their characters endure truly strange and horrific backstories, but they make them the most relatable of the cast. They provide the emotional core of this bizarre adventure.

It’s hard not to spoil the film. The film poses the question: in our capitalist society on the brink of collapse as loneliness and fear spread, what is the next step in our relationship with technology? The entire beginning of the film feels like Verbinski and Robinson shouting into a void. With the way technology is rapidly advancing in the real world, the film’s social commentary doesn’t feel too far off.  The way it portrays our societal relationship to smart devices is dialed up to 11. The film also touches on what it even means to have a soul, and the lengths people will go to avoid interacting with our current reality. There were moments when I thought hard about my own relationship with my phone.
